Reminder: Critique Spaces

This is another reminder that work needs to be taken down by 8am Friday morning so Branden and Stu can get the spaces ready for the next week of critiques. When I got to work this morning they were busy taking work down in addition to painting. Please take it down yourself, that is a lot of additional time they need to spend in the morning and it shouldn't be.

Classes are held in the Whittier classroom/Gallery:
Tuesdays: 6:30-9:30
Thursdays: 1:30-4:30, 6:30-9:30
(The thesis draft classes are not actually held in Whittier like the schedule says they are)

Milwaukee Art Museum Goes Pink

For the opening of "Andy Warhol: The Last Decade," the Milwaukee Art Museum has decided to light the Calatrava pink. The timing happens to coincide with October being breast cancer awareness month, so the lighting will stay pink for 10 nights to show support.

Etsy.com

If you haven't heard of Etsy it is a great place where you can sell your work. This site is aimed more towards less expensive work, like prints or photographs that you may have laying around and want to get rid of. There is a 20 cent cost to place items on the site for 4 months. There is some internet marketing info on the site to boost your page views/sales if you want better results. It is pretty cheap to try, who knows, you could sell all that art you made, don't really want to keep, but don't want to just throw out. (Keep in mind the art sale is coming up in November)

U + The Flu

If you didn't open the attachment from the flu e-mail we got here's the info. (It is pretty much common sense)

- If you have a fever stay home! (You can get disposable thermometers from Student Affairs or Public Safety)

- E-mail your teachers and Student Affairs that you have a fever/the flu (your grade will not be docked for having the flu, they are taking this pretty seriously)

- Rest, drink lots of fluids, stay away from other people

- If you are at higher risk for complications (if you are pregnant or have chronic health conditions) call a health care provider
     - Park Nicollet Clinic: (952) 993-3512

Other info I've heard:

- Do not go to the doctor unless you absolutely have to since that will be a hotbed for the flu

- If you are under 24 it is recommended to get a flu shot

Teaching Opportunity

After School Program Needed

Quest Academy is looking to offer an after school program for students grades 5-12. They are open to the structure and format of the program as well as how often they meet and for how long. They are currently looking for proposals with costs to present to parents who would ultimately support it.

If you are interested in putting together your own arts program (great experience for your teaching resume) create a brief proposal including basic structure, how many times a week it would meet, cost for your time, cost for supplies, etc. and e-mail no later than Friday, September 18th.

FYI - the school day ends at 4:00, so the class would be either 4:00-5:00 or 4:00-5:30

The Power of Honey

Being back at school colds are starting to spread. I was starting to feel a cold coming on last week so, taking my mother's advice, I tried honey and cinnamon for three days and it actually worked. Apparently honey and cinnamon can cure pretty much everything, or at least help prevent it. So if you are feeling sick and don't want to turn to medicine check out this website and it might help:

Breast Cancer Warning

While you may already know this, for those of you who don't it is important.

Women should not drink bottled water that has been sitting in a car. The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic bottle, which releases dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue. Use a glass bottle or stainless steel canteen, which you can find anywhere now since they are the new cool thing to drink out of.

In addition:

No plastic containers in the microwave

No water bottles in the freezer

No plastic wrap in the microwave

Fact: Fast food restaurants moved away from foam containers to paper, dioxin was one of the reasons.

I assume men should follow these general rules as well, but it is especially important for women.

PARK(ing) Day

I tend to delete the activities e-mails but this Parking day thing actually sounds interesting:

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, one-day, global event where artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spots into "PARK(ing)" spaces: temporary public parks. Anyone can participate, it is strictly a non-commercial project intended to promote creativity, civic engagement, critical thinking, unscripted social interactions, generosity and play.

When: Friday, September 18, 2009

You can be a part of MCAD's PARK(ing) Day project (e-mail megan_leafblad@mcad.edu) or start your own. Registration required to receive donated materials like sod for your space.

Your Blog/Website

Hey everyone, I have been searching for your website or blog and found a few of you but if I missed yours (especially for the new people) let me know what it is so I can add it. Also, some of the links might be old so if you have a newer one or want it taken down I can fix that as well. I can also link to your mnartists.org site if you would like, or any other sites like that.

Movie Get Together

Thomas sent an e-mail to everyone but in case you missed it:

Hey MFAer's

Seeing as we have this coming Monday [Labor Day] off I'm proposing a
venture down to the MOA Theaters to watch Inglorious Bastards. They don't
have times posted yet, but I figured sometime in the late afternoon.

Let me know if you're up for it.

Art Blogs (Not Related to MN)

I've been searching for some blogs that you may not have seen that also have good ratings, so here goes:

Crimson Kaiel Artist of the Day - promoting exciting visual media from around the world

Made by Girl - home decor and other pretty things by Jennifer Ramos. See her work and work that inspires her.

Cartoon Brew - animation conversation

From Art to Fashion - The influence of art (literature, painting, movies) on advertising

Daily Monster - Stefan G. Bucher creates a brand new monster every day, time-lapsed before your very eyes. He talks about graphic design, illustration, and visual culture.

I'm running out of time for today but I'll keep looking for new sites...

For the 1st Years

The academic support area tours are going on this week and they really are good to attend. If you want to use the printshop at all this semester/year there is paperwork to fill out to get access which you will get on the tour (it can also be accessed online for future semesters). While I have yet to use the 3D shop, going to the tour may give you ideas for different projects. They have a lot of machines there that can do some crazy stuff!

I know it may seem like a waste of time but you do learn about what the school has to offer, and this is really the only time you'll get this (plus, they really aren't very long). Also, if your group wants more in depth info from a department you can ask for it during these tours. Last year the printshop did a screenprinting demo.
